Paris is easily the most photographed city in the world. Especially in the 20th century, the metropolis on the Seine became the starting point for important cycles. Be it that photographers sought confirmation of a myth or critically questioned it. Eyes of Paris shows how important photographers saw and experienced Paris and explored the city with their cameras. Her perspective oscillates between documentary interest and subjective perception, chronicler’s duty and the projection of personal sensitivities. What unites all artists is their affinity for books. No city has been the subject of carefully designed photo books as often as Paris.
Beginning with Eugène Atget, the volume presents the most important photo books related to Paris in chronological order. The spectrum ranges from documentaries of old Paris to the ‘photography humaniste’ of the 1950s to the present with names such as Andreas Gursky and William Eggleston. Each title is presented in detail with a view to its conception and reception. Selected double pages document the special features of the respective book. Eyes of Paris is a history of photography, culture and contemporary history – and takes the reader on a journey to the Seine.
