Gaza Works
Kent Klich

Photographer Kent Klich has depicted life in Gaza since the early 2000s, offering alternative images to the short-lived sensationalism of mass media. With a profound interest in personal stories and a strong emphasis on collaborative efforts, his work reveals the effects of war and human rights violations on daily life, focusing on subtle forms of resistence to the current occupation of Gaza. Gaza Works, the book and exhibition consist of several series of images and video installations, Signs of Protest, 2001 – 2002, Gaza Photo Album, 2009, Killing Time, book and video installation, 2011 – 2012, Black Friday, 2014 – 2015, The Greenhouse, video installation, 2015, Resistance, 2016, GZA – Gaza International Airport , 2016 – ongoing. The projects are not separate, conclusive projects that are complete once they are published or exhibited. They are rather, images that continue to work – being used and reused in various combinations. They retain a validity and urgency as long as the conflict reigns and the occupation and blockade continue.

About the Artist
Kent Klich was born 1952 in Sweden. He studied psychology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and photography at International Center of Photography, New York, USA. He joined Magnum in 1998 and left in 2002. Kent Klich is a visual artist and educator working within the fields of photography and film, slow journalism, and collaborative methodologies of image-making and representation.    He focuses on the interconnection between disciplines; an image never stands alone but links with language, objects, sounds, and documents. His work narrates the social and political realities that we inhabit in their complexities by questioning and creating a multiplicity of entry points into unresolved issues, giving room to critical reflection as much as a space for emotional engagement.
