Why Was I Born in Russia was selected for inclusion in “DIY: Photographers & Books” exhibition curated by Barbara Tannenbaum, Curator of Photography at The Cleveland Museum of Art, a show which ran from the 11th of August through the 30th of December, 2012. This photographs in this book were shot on one of Toroptsov’s many trips to his hometown of Grodekovo near Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East, where he documents the environment of his family as well as his sister’s day to day life. The book is separated into three sections ‘myth’, ‘reality’ and ‘fiction’ and includes anecdotes about Grodekovo, Vladivostok as well as Toroptsov’s own life.

Yury Toroptsov is a visual artist, a certified professional coach, and a practitioner of arts-based coaching for individual and business clients. He holds an Advanced Certificate in Coaching, Leadership & Change from the ESSEC Business School in Paris. He lives and works in Paris.
