The exhibition consists of 91 photographs taken during the Spanish scientific expedition to the Pacific (1862-1866). The photographs, extraordinary in their documentary, historical, and artistic value, reflect the people and landscapes visited by the Spanish scientists during the trip. The photos are from the following areas: Cadiz, Spain; Brazil; Río de La Plata; Chile; Peru; Ecuador; Panama; and California. One of the most innovative aspects of the expedition was that the draftsman of the expedition, Rafael Castro y Ordóñez, carried a camera and his images show the Americas in the nineteenth century: its cities, people and nature. The collection was found twenty years ago in the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales and restored.
