For more than fifty years, Helena Almeida (Lisbon, 1934) has been building a work that places great emphasis on the body as it occupies and defines space, and on its performative encounter with the world. This publication traces the artist’s career in his favourite fields – painting, photography, video and drawing – and highlights the importance of his contribution to contemporary art. It contains a rich iconography covering his entire career, including some works rarely seen so far, and draws up an inventory of research with essays by Cornelia Butler, Peggy Phelan and Bernardo Pinto de Almeida, and an interview with the two curators of the exhibition, Marta Almeida and Joao Ribas.

About the Artist
Helena Almeida is a Portuguese multi-disciplinary artist best known for her performances regarding the body and its relationship to painting. Associated with the Body Art movement, Almeida’s performances confront the portrayal of women in art history, such as in her series For Study for Inner Improvement (1977).

As one of the leading institutions for contemporary art in Europe, without a permanent collection, WIELS presents temporary exhibitions by national and international artists, both emerging and more established. WIELS is a site of creation and dialogue, in which art and architecture form the bases for a discussion about current events and issues, not only through the exhibition programme, but also through a host of complementary activities. WIELS opened its doors in 2007, in a restored former brewery from the 1930s – designed by Belgian architect Adrien Blomme – and the idea of establishing a centre for contemporary art in the heart of Europe became a reality. Although still relatively young, WIELS has presented more than 65 exhibitions; it has welcomed over 130 residents; and has spearheaded innumerable educational and social-artistic initiatives.
