In 1999 his older sister Maija was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. At that time she was only 20 years old and the prognosis was not good. With the help of different treatments and a strong will she was able to extend and periodically enjoy her life. In 2007, when she was hospitalised again, Henrik started to document the following months, which were to be her last, for she passed away at home in April 2008. ‘Somehow I understood that these were the last moments and photographing was a natural way of being close to Maija’.
About the Artist
Finnish artist Henrik Malmström, currently lives and works in Buenos Aires. In addition to making books, videos and objects, his activities also include the ideation and curation of various artistic projects. On Borrowed Time is Malmström first published book.
