American photojournalist Dan Budnik was present at three key civil rights marches of the 1960s; The Youth March for Integrated Schools in 1958, The March on Washington in 1963 where Dr Martin Luther king gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech and the Selma to Montgomery March in 1965. Marching to the Freedom Dream presents a selection from Budnik’s albums of photographs and hand written captions of these important events.
About the Artist
Dan Budnik (b.1933, Long Island, NY) studied painting at the Art Students’ League of New York. After being drafted, he started photographing the New York school of Abstracts Expressionist and Pop Artists in the mid-fifties. From 1957 – 1964 he worked at Magnum Photos, New York, assisting several photographers. Since his time there, he has specialised in essays for leading national and international magazines, focussing on civil and human rights, ecological issues and artists.
