For 50 years Matson worked in Jerusalem for the photographic firm run by the American Colony, taking numerous photographs in Palestine and other countries round the Eastern Mediterranean. Here are just a few of his masterpieces from that period, dating from 1917 to 1942, but giving the impression of an immediate reality. These are photographs of people at work, at war, in the marketplace, of statemen and of shepherds tending their flocks. They are all photographs of great historical and artistic value.
