An Intimacy of Long Unfolding is a photobook bringing together photographs, essays and poems responding to sites in Aotearoa New Zealand which are associated with deep geological time. Humans have become a powerful geological force which is altering Earth’s systems and causing them to become dangerously unbalanced. In order to understand our current reality, we need to be able to imagine radically different temporal and spatial scales – from the nano scale of bacterial life to the macros scale of the cosmos. This book explores whether photography and poetry can work together to deepen our relationship with nonhuman time scales which far exceed our own. By doing so, we might better understand our entanglement with Earth’s geology and the ways in which our actions in the present will reverberate deep into the future.
