Collection of photographs taken at the time of the Gold Rush in the 1850s. Preserved at the National Gallery of Canada’s Canadian Photography Institute, they feature portraits of young men as well as landscapes often retouched by the photographers of the time; with a chapter devoted to the history of the daguerreotype.

About the Author
Luce Lebart is photography historian and exhibition curator. Previously she was director of the Canadian Photography Institute of the National Gallery of Canada from 2016 to 2018 after having been director of collections for the Société française de photographie in Paris for five years. Before, she was Responsible of the visual collections at the Archives départementales de l’Hérault in Montpellier.
