Spanish photojournalism was born in 1859 from the camera of Enrique Facio, who with the correspondent Pedro Antonio de Alarcón covered the military campaigns against the African Rif people, four years after the British Roger Fenton immortalized the Crimean War and began the narrative modern graphic of armed conflicts.
Facio’s are the first war snapshots to be published in our country and are included in the book Spanish War Photojournalists, co-edited by the Ministry of Defense and Turner. The authors of the texts, Alfonso Bauluz, editor of Internacional de Efe, and the journalist Rafael Moreno Izquierdo, propose a selection of photographs of some thirty Spanish reporters who have covered the wars of the last hundred and fifty years. They are “informers from the front who have stood out for getting as close as possible to the protagonists of the first line of fire and reflecting their experiences live”, they explain. His images have been and are seen on the front pages of newspapers inside and outside our borders. All of them «even those that have been left out of these pages are essential so that nothing can stop the truth», as Rosa María Calaf, the book’s prologuist, writes.
