Xia Boqian’s “Cupboard Memories” focuses on unsharable secrets, unfulfilled desires and irredeemable opportunities.
The book is an amalgamation of two series: Her “Out of the Closet” series portrays people who suffer, in private, from trauma or experiences in their life—from homosexual women experiencing discrimination to women bullied for their weight. Mixed in are photographs which cover secrets that are lighter in nature—hidden emotions and affections, daily embarrassments and daydreamt romances. Boqian’s photographs employ improvisation and intimacy to stage short, poetic moments of freedom, in which her subjects share, for an instance, their unspeakables.

About the Artist
Born in Sichuan, China, in 1992, Boqiàn began her journey in landscape photography in 2010, drawn by her love for nature. By 2012, Boqiàn ventured into portrait photography, but struggled to find inspiration and satisfaction in her work. This began to change in 2014 with the emergence of her series “Out of the Closet.” As an artist Xià prefers to refrain from labelling her work, believing that giving viewers the freedom to interpret her images allows for contemplation and emotional engagement.
