the echo of water is a photozine by Virginia Woods-Jack in which the artist explores water as an archive for her familial history, which sees us scattered around the globe with cherished stories of family and home becoming diluted and doubtless lost. Weaving threads across our intergenerational and elusive search for “home”, the echo of water reimagines the Ocean as a collaborative space where archival and contemporary images become the anchors for actual and imagined stories. Suturing past to the present, the Ocean becomes a storied stage, and water is the element that connects us whilst stretching out between us.

About the Artist
Virginia Woods-Jack is a photographic artist and curator from the UK, currently based in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Her work delves into the deep-rooted connections we have to place, materiality and memory, examining how memory shapes our interactions with the natural world and emphasising the importance of care. Her pieces often feature recurring themes of the sky and water, both of which act as a gateway to source, as well as an archive for desire, memory, wonder and ecological experience. By exploring the spiritual and connective aspects of place, VWJ uses the temporal qualities inherent in photography to consider the relationship between the human and more-than-human worlds.
