Up-sizing, downsizing, moving on, emigrating, travelling, hoarding, re-locating, de-cluttering, re-decorating, consuming, wishing, attaching, hoping, detaching, going somewhere, going nowhere, clinging on, letting go, in-between.

Yi Fu Tuan’s claim that ‘space is security and space is freedom…’ is embodied in the self-storage spaces on the peripheries of cities and towns. These spaces which store material possessions reflect who we are and how we now live in our contemporary world. Through photographs and stories Self Storage documents these spaces and the life experiences which bring people into them, catering for, amongst others, the ‘tourists and vagabonds’ (Zygmunt Bauman) of global mobility and offering a solution to consumer society and the ‘in-between-ness’ of the times we find ourselves in.

‘Self-Storage’ has received a small arts grant from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and its making has been greatly facilitated by the help of U Store It and Need More Space (Nesta).
