The photographs in The Traveller span a period of 15 years or more and cover Harvey’s many journeys from the South Pacific through Asia to Paris, his European spiritual home. Part fiction, part autobiography the book deals with Benge’s recurring themes of loss, and, as his self portraits attest, impermanence. The Traveller is a personal reflection of the world where strange connections occur. Benge’s photographs never offer answers, only questions to tempt the curious. His democratic view is an acerbic, wry response to the world in free-fall where nothing is certain. Yet there is humour, affection, hope and unexpected beauty.
About the Artist
Harvey Benge (1944–2019) was a prolific photographer and committed maker of photobooks. Working between Auckland and Paris he published over 70 titles, often in the form of limited editions. Publishers included Dewi Lewis in the UK, Kehrer Verlag in Germany and Super Labo in Japan, as well as Benge’s own imprint FAQ Editions. >His photographs have also been shown in public and private galleries in the UK and throughout Europe as well as in New Zealand. He has twice been a finalist in the prestigious Prix du Livre at Arles Photography Festival, France.
