In 2008, the New York Athletic Club Rugby Team won the coveted Rugby Super League Championship. During this historic season, Daniel D’Ottavio followed the team’s home games at Travers Island, photographing the action on the field and on the sidelines with only a handheld medium format camera. The result is no ordinary sports photography. If you seek out rugby photography, you will find many images that depict the game as we – the spectators – see it. Instead, Daniel’s images show us the game as the players see and experience it. The limited edition book presents 34 tritone images printed on uncoated paper, and bound in a printed cloth drop-spine hardcover with screen printed spine detail.
About the Artist
Daniel D’Ottavio is a commercial photographer based in New York City, working principally within the intersection of fashion and sport. Daniel’s atypical approach to sports photography resists the lure of automatic focus and high-powered lenses in favor of a “slower” aesthetic, achieving a look that feels at once contemporary and of a different time.
