Most Ugandans are unable to take a holiday. But it is possible for them to have photos taken with a better world in the background once a year. Pose (Ugandan Images) shows us the photo studios of East-African Uganda as places where one can escape from reality for a short while. In this book, the reader can reconstruct the small studio space by folding out panoramic photos. Pose shows us what we are made to see, rather than what the world actually looks like. Or not?

About the Artist
Initially trained as a photographer (BFA, MFA, MA) at several universities in the Netherlands, I finalised a PhD ‘in and through the arts’ at Leiden University in November 2018. My dissertation consists of 8 artist books – each focusing on a particular collection of photographs encountered in Uganda -, numerous exhibitions related to these books, and a thesis. I now use my artistic practice as a research method to activate informal and formal ‘archives’ in order to investigate the historical and contemporary ‘image’ of particular realities on the African continent and the photographic practices that ‘made them’. The actions that are part of my practice range from producing and distributing photographs to initiating various modes of collective making, and discursive writing.
