‘This takes place on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea, but it could equally happen here. We are in Tangier, a place of departures, a border town between the North and the South of the world. The border serves those who pass through it looking to cross the Strait and reach Europe, as well as those returning home to find their loved ones. Both groups no longer feel at home, neither here in their home country, nor in the cities, towns or suburbs where they reside on the other side of the sea. Both places foster the same feeling of alienation, marginalisation, a deep and insatiable wound: the loss of a country.”

About the Artist
Born in Rome in 1972, Marco Barbon lives in France since 2001.
After a PHD in Aesthetics of Photography at the EHESS in Paris, he took his first steps in the world of photography by working for five years in the staff of Magnum Photos. Since 2005 he has devoted himself to a personal photographic research which invests the photographic image as a border zone between reality and imagination, document and fiction. The nature of photography as a trace as well as its ability to evoke the off-camera and to represent the absence constitute in particular the common thread of his latest works.
