国庆节 Nationalfeiertag is a book about one of the biggest, and most monitored squares in the world: Tiananmen Square in Beijing. 26 years ago the student protest took place in April and May and the massacre on the 4th of June, 1989. Officials and police try to control the images taken on the Square. Katja Stuke filmed a few hours of material on Tiananmen Square on the Chinese National Holiday, 1st of October, 2011. From this footage she extracted hundreds of portraits. The book combines these portraits with newspaper clippings which are collected and spread by the June 4th Museum in Hong Kong to keep the memory of the protests of 1989 alive.

About the Artist
Katja Stuke (b. 1968) is a German artist. She lives and works in Düsseldorf. Together with Oliver Sieber she covers an extensive range of personas: photographers and artists, curators and exhibition organisers, designers and art book editors. Yet as they move through their photographic cosmos, it is not always so easy to determine where one identity ends and the other begins. Regardless, in their works and activities as artists and art facilitators they have long since become moderators of a very specific photographic culture.
