The exhibition ‘History Reveals (1880s-1940s)’ was presented by the museum of photography, Seoul, introducing its collection of Korean modern pictures with a purpose to remind the importance of a photo archive as historical material. While practices and discourses on photography in Korea mainly deal with ‘Art photography,’ the exhibition is noteworthy for looking at souvenir photographs, taken during the modern era, from the late 19th century to early 1900s before regaining independence in 1945.
This is a new approach to photography in terms that one cites in art discourses the examples, photographed for other purposes such as souvenir photos and reads them in art critical contexts. While looking at multipurpose of photography, which cannot be limited particularly to art form, one can newly perceive photography as a daily item and see diverse spectrum of its history. While Korean photography still holds on to highbrow concept of art, being distanced from general viewers, this exhibition steps to the public with the collection of commemorative photographs, which has become a part of daily life in general.
