The Austrian photographer Elfie Semotan became internationally known with her fashion and advertising shots. Her photographic approach has been guided from the start by the idea of capturing a person’s personality. Elfie Semotan stages and constructs multifaceted stories within the image format. The visual arts often serve as a source of inspiration for her. In addition to art-historical quotes, this passion is reflected in her many artist portraits and studio photos.
On the occasion of her 80th birthday, KUNST HAUS WIEN is honoring Elfie Semotan with a comprehensive retrospective. The exhibition Posture and Pose spans six decades of her diverse artistic work and makes it possible to experience Semotan’s photographic cosmos as a multi-layered network of specific approaches to the medium of photography. Around 150 works will be shown, from the well-known fashion and advertising photographs and haunting portraits to poetic landscape shots and still lifes.
About the Artist
Elfie Semotan (*1941, Wels, Austria) studied at the Modeschule and worked as a model before becoming a fashion, advertising, and portrait photographer. She worked with Martin Kippenberger on the series of works known as Floß der Medusa (Medusa’s Raft). She divides her time among New York, Vienna, and Jennersdorf, Austria.

About the Publisher
