This is a unique and important collection of interviews with contemporary sound artists who use field recording in their work. From its early origins in wildlife sound and in ethnographic research, field recording has expanded over the last few decades into a diverse range of practices which explore and investigate aspects of the lived environment, from the microscopic to the panoramic, through the medium of recorded sound. These conversations explore the fundamental issues that underlie the development of field recording as the core of their activity. Recurring themes include early motivations, aesthetic preferences, the audible presence of the recordist and the nature of the field.

About the Artists
Professor Cathy Lane is a composer, sound artist and academic. Her work uses spoken word, field recordings and archive material to explore aspects of our listening relationship with each other and the multiverse. She is currently focused on how sound relates to the past, our histories, environment and our collective and individual memories from a feminist perspective. Aspects of her creative practice have developed out of these interests and include composition and installation-based work. She also writes and lectures on these and related subjects as well as collaborating with choreographers, film makers, visual artists and other musicians.

Angus Carlyle is Professor of Sound and Landscape at UAL and a member of the research centre CRiSAP. He studied law as an undergraduate, completed a masters in political theory and a doctorate on the conditions of vocalised political exchange. He subsequent theoretical engagements were with cyberculture, photography and architecture before developing his long-standing pre-occupation with environments, their inhabitations and representations. His creative work shifts between a documentary impulse and a more poetic register, deploys experimental writing and compositions based on field recording, often in collaboration with others.

Uniformbooks is an independent imprint for the visual and literary arts, cultural geography and history, music and bibliographic studies. It was founded in 2011 and is operated by Colin Sackett, an artist and publisher who since the 1980s has investigated the book as a primary form for the reading, notation and classification of landscape by text and image.
