Constructing a River is a multifaceted project by Matilde Meireles and Chrysoula Drakaki. The artists used field recording and photography to explore how the space along the River Lagan in Belfast has been shaped with different purposes in mind. Constructing a River frames the area between Weir 2 and the mouth of the river. At the centre of this search is the Lagan Weir.

About the Artist
Matilde Meireles is a recordist, sound artist, and researcher who makes use of field recordings to compose site oriented projects. Her works have been exhibited in Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, Mozambique, Portugal, Spain, and United Kingdom. She has completed a practice-led PhD in Sound Art at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Queen’s University Belfast, where she is currently a post-doctoral Research Fellow. She is part of the research groups Recomposing the City, SARC_Immerse, and Translating Improvisation. She collaborates with Aidan Deery to form the field-recording duo bunú. She also collaborates with Conor McCafferty: together they use field recordings as a tool to explore and articulate urban transformation.

Chrysoula Drakaki’s main field of study is environmental science. She started studying photography in 2015 at Belfast Exposed photography gallery, where she exhibited in the group show Reciprocated Gaze in 2017. Chrysoula approaches photography as a means of discovery and communication, while exploring how we relate to our environment.In 2017 Chrysoula and Matilde started collaborating under the moniker Alongside. Together they use photography and field recording to explore and document durational experiences of places.

About the Publisher
Optophono was established in 2013 as a music label that goes beyond fixed recordings. Instead of publishing fixed media such as CDs or DVDs, they make interactive editions that we print on external drives and USBs. Each edition comes with software or hardware that makes it possible for the listener to create their own music at home. Their aim is to change how recordings are conceived and created by artists, and how they are experienced by listeners.
