Between April and July 2022, Bombarral, Leiria, Lourinhã and Torres Vedras are live stages that invite you to discover the territory in public space. Project is supported by Rede Cultura 2027.
The project is called Flâneur ao Centro and will take place between April and July, in public spaces in the municipalities of Bombarral, Leiria, Lourinhã and Torres Vedras into art stages. The proposal for artistic intervention in the public space was designed and coordinated by Procurarte, in partnership with the aforementioned municipalities, and invites visitors to visit photography exhibitions in the streets and squares. The project that established a strategic partnership with Rede Cultura 2027 and Turismo do Centro kicks off with the first exhibition in Leiria, from April 9 to May 1, at Largo Papa Paulo VI. This is followed by Bombarral, from May 7th to 29th, at Praça do Município, Lourinhã, from June 4th to 26th, at Praça José Máximo da Costa, and Torres Vedras (Santa Cruz), July 2nd to 24th, at Largo Jaime Baptista da Costa. “This project challenges artists to create new readings about this territory, having as its starting point the concept of flâneur and as a physical context this region as a social kaleidoscope in constant mutation. The objective is, based on artistic creation and photography, to promote a contemporary reading of the territory”, explains Nuno Ricou Salgado, from Procur.arte.
FLÂNEUR AO CENTRO is freely inspired by the work and career of the architect Ernesto Korrodi, who, from Leiria, carried out several works in mainland Portugal. Of Swiss origin, Korrodi was naturalized Portuguese, pioneered Art Nouveau and received two Valmor Awards. In addition to his heritage studies, he designed public buildings, houses, farms and theaters in the region. The fauna and flora characteristic of the region (grapes, pears, apples, figs, etc.) are present in all of his work, both in stonework and in ironwork and furniture. Inspired by the wandering spirit of Ernesto Korrodi, 4 artists were invited – Catarina Botelho, Fábio Cunha, Joshua Phillips and Róisín White – to reread the region and rediscover this territory.
Baudelaire defines the flâneur as “someone who walks around the city with the aim of experiencing it”. Walter Benjamin describes the flâneur as a product of modern life, a botanist of the asphalt and the city as an authentic sacred ground of flânerie. Since then, the flâneur concept has been used as a tool to understand urban phenomena and modernity in cultural, economic and social terms.

About the Collective
Flâneur – New Urban Narratives is a network project based on an international partnership of some 20 organisations from 11 different countries. Its main purpose is to carry out artistic interventions in public spaces through contemporary photography. The Project encourages artists to create new interpretations of the urban terrain, having the concept of flâneur as a starting point and considering the physical context of the city as a social kaleidoscope in constant evolution. Besides the art projects and interventions in the public space, Flâneur is comprised of several other dimensions brought to light in workshops, masterclasses, artistic residences, creative camps and conferences – initiatives intended to foster a critical analysis of contemporary photography and contribute to a discussion about the public space as a social territory.
